About Us
Shiluv is an independent Jerusalem-based non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the emotional well being of families of all social classes and denominations and the advancement of the specialization of family therapy within the professional community. It was founded in 1971. Shiluv has a distinguished board of trustees who actively support and work with the staff.
Shiluv was created with the idea of focusing on the family as a system that affects the functioning of its members. We wanted to use the resources of the family in treating problems that may have manifested themselves in any one of the family members: school problems, behavior problems, eating disorders, parental inadequacies, drug, sex, alcohol abuse, depression, incest, marital conflict, suicide attempts, trauma, etc.
Systems Approach
The family is seen as an organic unit that needs to be understood in order to treat the identified problems. Until today, Shiluv is a proponent of these principles. Our staff embodies a variety of worldviews, theories and therapeutic techniques. Their common bond, however, is a family systems therapy approach, with special attention given to the inner world of the client, his/her feelings, needs and personal history. We offer our services, in half a dozen languages, to the population of Jerusalem as well as its surrounding environs.
Helping Families
Another guiding principle of Shiluv was the need to make highly professional treatment available at a cost that a working family could afford. Therefore, the fees for families have always been determined on a sliding scale according to income. Eleven years ago, we took this principle one-step further and decided to offer special subsidies (above and beyond those given on the sliding scale) to families with children at risk (suicidal children, severe cases of abuse, e.g. incest). We see on the average 400 families and couples a year.
Training Center
In 1978, Shiluv inaugurated its Training Center. Our program has evolved over the years and we have trained more than a thousand professionals in family therapy. The Training Center focuses on the development and enhancement of clinical skills. It is based on a systemic understanding of family dynamics with an integrative orientation of different family therapy models. We offer a comprehensive 3-4 year program, recognized for accreditation by the Israel Association of Marital and Family Therapy. Included in the training are theory courses, live-supervision, individual and group supervision and clinical skills' workshops. Our teaching includes the use of a one-way screen, video recordings and training tapes, role- play and simulations.
In addition, therapists seeking to become certified as family therapy practitioners or supervisors can complete their supervisory hours at Shiluv. We also create training programs to meet the needs of social service agencies and psychiatric settings in the Jerusalem area.
